DISCOVERING
LYON
Lyon
is the second largest city in France, a city founded by the
Romans and with more than two thousand and five hundred years
of history, perhaps because of this we can found so many museums
here that are of great importance as the Lumière Museum,
dedicated to the Lumière brothers, who were born in Lyon
and invented the movie, or the Museum of the Automobile, with
one of the largest collections of vehicles of all kinds in the
world.
Any
trip in Lyon should start for its old quarter, known as Vieux
Lyon or Old Lyon. In its narrow and bustling streets we find
amazing attractions like the International Museum of Marionettes
and the puppets, dedicated to Guignol, which was invented in
Lyon, and the International Museum of Miniatures, which brings
together a huge collection of models manufactured in the museum.
It
is in the Vieux Lyon which takes the tram to go up to the Furvière
hill, where is the beautiful Cathedral of Notre Dame of Furvière,
one of the most beautiful gothic buildings in France and which
has an astonishing view of Lyon. If you visit the cathedral
be sure to see the chapel, which is on the right of their entry,
and its beautiful crypt, whose lift is left of their entry.
Well
worth a visit to the Hotel de Dieu, or General Hospital of Lyon,
and is a huge building that had its beginning in the year of
546, the Hotel de Dieu houses one of the most spectacular hospitals
museums in the world, with impressive pieces gathered from its
foundation, with emphasis on the surgical material of the Middle
Ages.
Another
unforgettable museum is the Museum of the Resistance, built
in the former headquarters of the Gestapo, Hitler's policy police,
and dedicated to the resistance to Nazism, Lyon was the capital
of the French Resistance, were born there and lived through
its most famous leaders.
We
also recommend a long walk in the sidewalk on the left bank
of the Rhone River, where can be found beautiful fountains and
boats that have bars, restaurants and small museums. The walk
is especially beautiful at dusk, when the last rays of the sun
illuminate the multi colored buildings on the banks of the Rhone
River.
Near
Lyon and Big Lyon there are great places to visit, as the medieval
city of Pérouges and the city of Vienne. Pérouges
is a small city all built with stone, which was kept exactly
as it was in the Middle Ages, if you visit Pérouges,
which may be cycling through the cycle Lyon - Pérouges,
be sure to visit his factory of glass artifacts and experience
its typical dish, the Gallet of Pérouges, a kind of cobbler.
Vienne is a small town that has among its many attractions Roman
buildings, including the precious temple of Augustus and Livia,
in Charles de Gaulle Square.
Lyon
is a beautiful city and, although I love it, I can not find
words to describe all its charm, I just add that worth it be
known the Parks Tete D'or and of the Birds (which I describe
in other article), the boat trip crossing the River Rhone with
the meeting of the waters of the Rhone and Saone Rivers, and
the districts of Croix Rousse and Furvière, which are
the highest points of Lyon, with beautiful views of the city.
